Anyone with an affinity for the great outdoors and who loves nothing more than spending time in a healthy, open aired environment must pay a visit to The Alver Valley Country Park. A haven for country wildlife and with a wealth of activities to enjoy, a visit to the park is a great day out for the whole family.
One of the most scenic locations in Gosport, Alver Valley Country Park is located at the Western Gateway, just off Cherque Way. Perfect for ramblers, the environment is well-maintained and it also features a play area which has much to keep children occupied from the monkey bars and ginormous slides to large mounds to scale.
However, what sets Alver Valley Country Park apart from other activities in the area is the range of activities visitors can engage in. Visit the park and you’ll discover one of the UK’s premier BMX tracks, perfect for experienced riders and novices alike, the track is open to the general public when not being used by Gosport BMX club for competitions or meet-ups. Climb to the summit of Sandhill and enjoy panoramic views over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. Amble across the River Alver at Apple Dumpling Bridge or trek along Alver Way, a riverside route stretching between Alver Valley Country Park and Stokes Bay, enjoying the tranquil environment and admiring some of Gosport’s most spectacular scenery.
Anyone with a love of nature will be entranced by Gosport’s idyllic wildlife haven. Within the park is ‘The Wildgrounds’, a sanctuary for nature and local wildlife and a site of scientific interest and national importance. Visitors will need a permit to enter – though it’s certainly worth obtaining one! Here’s where you’ll discover rare woodland pasture and ancient oak pollards, a butterfly meadow and a beautiful woodland pond.
Visit the grasslands and climb Junkett Hill. On your journey upward you’re likely to discover skylarks, basking lizards, butterflies and maybe the odd barn owl when the sun goes down. Perfect for spending a relaxing mid-afternoon or early evening stroll, the grassland is a treat for everyone.
Keen anglers will also discover a fishing oasis upon visiting the Alver Valley Country Park. Set amongst lush vegetation, there’s a lake that’s perfect for casting a line. Managed by The Portsmouth and District Angling Society (PDAS), the lake is home to small carp, tench, roach, rudd and perch. Anglers will need to be members of the PDAS, however, it’s the ideal location for beginners and children.
